In memory and in honour of May Ayim



25 years ago, on 9 August 1996, at the age of 36, May Opitz, alias May Ayim chose to take her own life.


May was born in Hamburg in 1960. Her mother (German) and her father (Ghanaian) surrendered her to an orphanage where she spent her first years, before she was adopted by a German family.


Poet, author and activist, May was one of the founders of the Initiative for Black Germans and Black People in Germany (ISD).


She was co-editor and co-author of "Farbe bekennen". (Afro-German women on the tracks of their histories).
